NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM CUMBIA KITCHEN

  • Trying a new way of working. Each morning I record one song from scratch, start to finish, before checking my phone. Most of them are bad, a few are fine, and one of them, Wide Open Road, Narrow Escape, I can't stop playing. It turns out the trick is to finish before you have time to doubt it.

  • Added an enamel pin to the shop. It's small, it's shiny, it looks like a moth.

  • Got lost on the way to rehearsal. Found a lovely little park. Wrote half a song on a bench.

  • A thank-you to the friend who lent me their basement, their drum kit and their tolerance.

  • New record, Heavy Rain, Light Sleeper, out on Friday. It's the quietest thing I've done: mostly one guitar, one voice and the sound of a radiator in the next room. I almost added drums three times and talked myself out of it three times. Pre-orders are open, and the first track, Somewhere to Be, is yours the second you click.

  • My dog has learned to howl on the high note of Tsuki no Michi. It's very flattering.

  • All the pressing money came from people who bought a download. This is a thank-you note in the form of a post.

  • Played Club Quarantine Street last night and the room was so small that one of the players had to stand in the doorway. Perfect.

  • I've been thinking about why I make music, and the honest answer is that I can't stop. I did try, once, for about a year. I took a job with a pension and a parking space. By March I was writing songs in the parking lot at lunch. So here I am, no pension, no parking space, very happy.

  • A slow-burn new one. Crosswalk is eleven tracks of midweek feelings.
